Copying or Moving a Campaign Item Between Campaigns

How to copy or move all types of campaign items from one campaign to another.

Introduction

There are three different types of materials that can be placed into a campaign as campaign items: Layout-based templates (print and digital), HTML-based templates, and assets from the Media Library.  Both HTML template and asset campaign item types are linked to a single representation of the item in either the HTML template table or the Media Library. Therefore, these types can exist in multiple campaigns at once. They aren't really "moved", but are added and deleted from a campaign.

Layout-based templates behave a bit differently in that each campaign houses a separate version of the template. Therefore, layout-based templates cannot simply be assigned to multiple campaigns or moved from one campaign to another in a single step. Layout-based templates inside any campaign must either be assigned to a campaign from a master template or cloned from a layout-based template in the same campaign. Therefore, moving an existing campaign template into another campaign requires a two-step process.

Copying or Moving a Layout-based Campaign Item Between Campaigns

The first step in moving or copying a layout-based template from one campaign to another is to clone the layout template to a Master Template using the "Clone to Master" feature in the Layout Template Composition tab (shown below).

This will create a Master Template version of this template that is unassigned to a campaign.

The second step is to take the newly created master template and add it to the new campaign just like any other master template.

Once the Master Template has been assigned to a campaign, then the link to the Master Template is broken and a new Campaign Template is created. Now there are two templates that are identical in two campaigns.  It is important to understand that these are two completely independent templates at this point.

If the operation is to move the template, not just to copy it, the System Administrator or Template Composer can delete the original campaign item by using the trash can icon shown below.

It is also a recommended practice to delete the Master template that was used to create the new campaign template since it was a temporary file whose only purpose was to create the Campaign template in the new location. This will prevent the Master Template tab from getting cluttered with templates that aren't true masters.

Moving a Layout-based Campaign Item Whose Template is the Same as a Master Template

If the template for the new campaign is the same as an existing master template, then the System Administrator or Template Composer can skip the step of cloning the campaign template to a master and just add the template into the new campaign using the standard process of adding a master template to a campaign.
